Burn Ban in Effect

The North Carolina Commissioner of Agriculture has issued a statewide burn ban as of 8 a.m. Friday, March 21, 2025. Open fires, including campfires, are prohibited at all 100 counties and all state parks.

Fire Safety at State Parks

Nearly all North Carolina counties are currently under a drought advisory. One county is experiencing severe drought, 56 counties are experiencing moderate drought, and an additional 42 are experiencing abnormally dry conditions. In all drought conditions, carelessness with fire use can easily and quickly start wildfires.

Cooking Food

All campers should come prepared and bring a portable gas stove or grill to cook food.

Campers may utilize charcoal grills if no other local ordinances prohibit their use. Contact the park to find out whether you can use charcoal grills.

When you are done using a charcoal grill, pour (instead of sprinkle) water thoroughly over the charcoal briquettes. The coals should be soaked with water. Make sure you stir the coals and pour additional water to ensure all of them are completely out. Do not bury the coals.

Never leave a stove or grill unattended.

Using Lanterns, Stoves and Heaters

Be careful when you are adding fuel to a lantern, stove or heater. Make sure it is cool and placed on even ground with plenty of space around. If you spill fuel, do not light a fire until you have moved away from the spill. Handle and store flammable liquid containers with care.

Do not light lanterns or stoves inside a tent, trailer or camper.

Smoking

Use dirt to grind out cigarettes, cigars or pipe tobacco. Do not use a log or a stump.

You should not smoke while you are walking or riding your horse or bike.
