About the Park

Located in Columbus, Robeson, Scotland, and Hoke counties 60 miles south of Fayetteville, Lumber River State Park has two access areas located about 1 hour from each other: Princess Ann and Chalk Banks. Possibilities for paddling on this 115-mile river are extraordinary. An abundance of wildlife and plant life, including the belted kingfisher and the rare Carolina bogmint, helped Lumber River earn federal designation as a National Wild and Scenic River, the only blackwater river in the state to have that honor.

Both accesses have camping facilities. If you have a reservation, please verify the location of your campsite prior to your visit. Princess Ann and Chalk Banks accesses are located 1 hour apart, so please check that you are headed to the correct campground.

Fees

There are no fees required to access Lumber River State Park for day use. Fees are charged for camping, certain event permits and facility reservations.

Pets

Pets are allowed at the park and campsites, except they are not permitted inside buildings. Pets must be on an attended leash of no longer than 6 feet at all times.

Scheduled Events at Lumber River State Park

Park staff lead regularly scheduled interpretive programs that allow the public to gain perspective into what makes North Carolina state parks naturally wonderful. Learning opportunities are available for all ages. Most events are free, though some may require pre-registration.

Friends of State Parks

Friends of State Parks is a nonprofit citizen organization supporting, promoting, and advocating for the North Carolina State Parks system as a whole. Though Lumber River State Park does not currently have a local friends group, FSP helps support Lumber River, and the group can receive donations dedicated to a specific park.
