There are three campsites that can accommodate no more than six people and two tents each. There is also a zone camping area that can accommodate three sites of no more than six people and two tents each.

These are primitive campsites with no facilities. The sites are approximately a 1- to 2-mile hike from the trailhead. All supplies, including water, must be packed in to the sites. To drink water from nearby creeks and streams, use a filtration device or boil the water for at least 5 minutes.

Campfires are not allowed. Cooking by camp stove is permitted.

These campsites are available on a first-come, first-served walk-up basis only and cannot be reserved. Each site is $15 per night. You are required to pay the reservation fee. There is a self-registration box at the trailhead where you place your payment in an envelope. Please fill out all required information, including all vehicle information.

Elk Knob State Park has two group sites that can accommodate up to 26 people each. A minimum of 7 people is required to use the group sites, and the group sites are for organized groups only.

A pit toilet is shared by the two group sites. All supplies, including water, must be packed in to the sites — they are located 1 to 2 miles from the trailhead. To drink water from nearby creeks and streams, use a filtration device or boil the water for at least 5 minutes.

If you leave the park and do not return before closing time, you will not be able to re-enter. Check with the park office during business hours for the after-hours emergency phone number.

Firewood

Campfires are prohibited at Elk Knob State Park.

Making Reservations

All North Carolina state park campgrounds are designated for recreation only. A single campsite can be reserved for a maximum of 14 consecutive nights within any 30-day period. Upon reaching that limit, a camper must vacate the park for 16 nights before returning.

The backpack and zone camping sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Reservations for the group campsites can be made up to 6 months in advance.

Changes and Cancellations
