Mid to late September is the prime time for migrating raptors. Mt. Mitchell’s summit offers an excellent spot to watch for migrating raptors. One species, the Broadwing hawk, migrates in groups that can sometime have dozens to hundreds of birds.  Other raptors that might be seen include peregrine falcon, merlin, kestrel, sharp-shinned hawk, Cooper’s hawk, bald eagle, red tail and red shouldered hawk. Join us as we scan the skies for these winged predators. We will share information on raptor identification, ecology and migration. Bring binoculars.

Meet at the summit observation platform. 10 am to 3 pm.
