Join us at Merchants Millpond State Park for a paddle to the "Big Tree"! Many people don't know that Merchants Millpond is home to the second largest tree in North Carolina. This ancient cypress is estimated to be 700-1400 years old and is quite a sight to behold. Located deep in Lassiter Swamp, we occasionally lead trips to this giant.

This event is open to the public. Bring your own canoe if you have one, but if not, we have some available for rent for $25. THIS IS AN ALL-DAY EVENT! It usually takes 2.5 hours to reach the big tree, and we have lunch when we get there. We will meet at the visitor center at 9:00 AM to discuss our gameplan for the day before we head out. Guests are encouraged to dress for the weather. Sunglasses, sunscreen, a good hat, and lots of snacks and water are strongly recommended.

The big tree is truly something to see! Don't miss this opportunity to experience it in person.

Registration begins March 24, 2025 at 9:00 a.m. To sign up, please call the visitor center at 252-357-1191.
