Serious plant pests can be introduced into our parks by campers who bring in firewood. To prevent this, many of our parks sell firewood. For campers who choose to bring in their own firewood, please use wood harvested from a source local to the park. Campers should not bring firewood from outside of North Carolina. Learn more

Attention: Bear Island Bathhouse Winterized: Restroom Facilities Closed and Potable Water Shut off. Ferry Service Closed for the Season. ... details ±

As of November 16, 2009 facilities on Bear Island are closed for the Season. The bathhouse has been winterized and all potable water has been shut off until Mid-March 2010. Bear Island will remain open for camping but campers must bring all necessities with them including drinking water. Ferry Service has ended and operations will resume in April, 2010.

The unspoiled allure of Hammocks Beach State Park and Bear Island.
The visitor center's back porch is a great place to learn about the park's natural history.
The ferries offer a scenic trip to Bear Island.
It's very common to see Atlantic bottlenose dolphins in the waters around the park.
The Bear Island bathhouse complex was completed in early 2004 and it offers a snack bar, restrooms and outdoor showers.
The island bathhouse offers a noteworthy view of Bear Island.

Grey foxes are common to the mainland and are the only fox that can climb trees.

Common buckeye butterfly. You will have a hard time finding something that isn't interesting in this unique and beautiful state park.
