In further efforts to reduce wildfire hazards and restore some areas of the native species within the park, park staff are planning prescribed burns for areas around the Sparrow Springs Access during the first part of 2014. Prescription burns are very weather dependent and may take place with very short notice.
Areas that may be affected by the planned prescribed burns include: the Visitors Center, the picnic areas/shelters, the park lake, the campground areas. Trails that may be affected include: Pinnacle Trail, Fern Trail, Lake Trail, Turnback Trail, and a small section of the Crowders Trail.
If you have plans to visit the park as part of an event or with a group, please contact the park a few days in advance (not weeks). Efforts will be made to notify the public well in advance via radio, newspaper, and television (where feasible). However, we repeat that these burns may take place with short notice because they must take place within restrictive weather conditions.
Questions can be directed to park staff during normal business hours at 704-853-5375. Our plan to attend one of the educational programs on prescribed fire offered during the next few months.
